Forgiveness is the theme for today.  Matthew 11:25 says, “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins too.”

Why must we forgive others first, before we are forgiven?   It seems backwards – after all, that other person did harm to you, right?  So why shouldn’t you wait until they forgive you before you do the same?

Because you cannot receive what you have not yet given.

When you hold onto resentment, anger and hurt, you are keeping yourself in a place where forgiveness is not possible.  A positive and negative energy cannot exist in the same moment, just as love and hate cannot exist in the same instant.  It is either one or the other…

The good news is that you get to choose which thoughts lead to the emotion we want.  Do you want to stay balled up in the past, constantly ruminating over some perceived injustice?  If so, then how does that make you feel?  Not too good…

Or, do you want to forgive the past, which really means release it from your present awareness, and meet this present moment clear of the negative residue?  How does that make you feel – much better, I guarantee.

Try it and see for yourself.  Release (forgive) a grudge and you will immediately feel relief.
