I received some upsetting news today about a situation that I thought was resolved. The letter in the mail triggered a flood of emotions that I thought were in the past. But the intensity of my emotional reaction was so strong that I decided to take a few minutes to examine what was really going on.
Guess what – the judgment and negativity I thought was dead is alive and well!
After I calmed down and stepped away for a few minutes, I realized that I had not really dealt with these emotions. They were sitting on a shelf, ready to come crashing down the instant a particular set of circumstances occurred.
Once I recognized that I still had not dealt with the core issue of self-criticism and judgment, I decided that today was the day.
I decided to use the forgiveness steps that I included in “The Faithful Companion Guide” and see what happened. The following is a short synopsis of the results.
1. Identify/describe the Trigger or Person;
2. Invite Jesus into the situation;
3. Ask myself if I still felt the same way after I turned the situation over to God;
4. Look at the situation again, knowing that Jesus is by my side, ready to guide me towards resolution.
After taking the time to move through these steps, I felt calmer, more in control and capable of creating a plan of action to move forward. I was no longer paralyzed by anger or fear (at myself and the other person). I felt the loving and secure presence of Jesus blanket me and I could think clearly again.
The best part was — I freed myself from letting that one piece of mail ruin my entire day.
